128GB Samsung SSDPDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 July 2008
ssdGreat news on the SSD front. Announced back in January, Samsung is at the moment mass producing its 1.8- and 2.5-inch SSDs in equally 64GB and 128GB capacities. And since these SATA II SSDs are based on MLC -- 64 MLC NAND flash chips of 16 gigabits each in the 9.5-mm thick 128GB SSD -- you can be expecting them to be cheap by comparison to SLC-based SSDs and faster by contrast to traditional laptop hard disk drives while lasting about 20 times longer than the anticipated 4-5 year life span of that mechanical spinner.

We're talking 70MB/s writes and 90MB/s reads and power utilization rated at just 0.2-watts idle or 0.5 watts when active -- far less than any of the models (including the SSDs tested by LAPTOP) experienced by Tom's which should help put any battery consumption concerns to rest. Heaping joyful on top of good, Samsung tells us to expect the 256GB SSD to go mass manufacture by the end of the year.

ECS G10ILPDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 July 2008
ECS has been mockery the netbook market for months now with its G10IL -- meticulously surveying the rivalry and batting its eyelashes at US consumers. Fortunately, LAPTOP was able to sit behind with Henry Kwan of ECS to help bring the flirtatious cycle to a satisfying conclusion.

rthAccordingly, we now recognize that the G10IL will ship in 8.9- and 10-inch models with the later most likely shipping to US soils. It'll be obtainable at an entry-level price of $399 in September operating on Linpus Lite 9.4 Linux off an 8GB SSD. It'll also be configurable with XP on an 80GB disk and EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA data for much more. No sappy delusions of educating the world's children here, the G10IL is meant for sober business use only. How refreshingly direct ECS.

AMD New New 2.6GHz quad-core PhenoPDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 01 July 2008
dvAMD has always been top of the line when it comes to the fastest processors out in the market. But lately their processor performance has been sluggish when compared to Intel’s technology.

AMD’s new 2.6GHz quad-core Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition is touted to be 5% faster than Intel’s – which is practically a joke. It also lacks when it comes to performance versus watt being consumed.

Being retailed at $235: Any takers? I’m sure overclockers find this as a hidden gem as they could easily tweak its performance up a couple of notches.
